A one-day course with supported online content aimed at providing the participant with the skills and knowledge to manage the paediatric patient in the immediate period of crisis.

Course Overview

A one-day course with supported online content aimed at providing the participant with the skills and knowledge to manage the paediatric patient in the immediate period of crisis. This course is a mix of hands-on practical skill stations, workshops and lectures. It includes the recognition, assessment and immediate management of the deteriorating child and cardiac arrest.

  • Recognition and initial management of the seriously ill child
  • Airway management skills
  • Basic Life Support
  • Emergency circulatory access, fluid administration and medications
  • Defibrillation skills (Manual and/or AED modes)
  • Cardiac arrest management using the ARC ALS Algorithm
  • Work as an effective team member in a cardiac arrest

Optional Targeted Training

Optional additional sessions to address specific needs of the candidates and their places of work may included:

  • ECG interpretation and cardiac rhythm analysis
  • Defibrillation and cardio-version practice
  • Basic trauma skills (e.g. c-spine immobilisation)
  • Resuscitation of the child with a tracheostomy

 

The course is run over one day and is mainly delivered as hands-on practical skill stations and workshops, with one lecture. The pre-course materials are sent two weeks before the start of the course and the candidate is advised to study the materials thoroughly. A 50 question MCQ is sent with the pre-course work to allow the candidate to identify their learning needs.

  • Pre-course learning to be completed prior to attending course
  • Continuous assessment of resuscitation skills is used on the course
